Granite mill stones

After yesterday’s rain, we had lovely weather today – mainly sunny and warm – so we were able to get back to work at Daba, setting survey points for the map. The work went very well again and we were able to add another 150 survey points to the 89 we set on the first day of work. We concentrated today on the south part of the site where the surface is generally lower than in the north, but with low mounds of broken red bricks and sherds. In the southern area are at least five very large red granite mill stones – some are partly buried and there may well be more beneath the surface.

We also noted one large quartzite block, several much smaller pieces of limestone and some fragments of black granite. The presence of the hard stones, in particular, would suggest that there was a pharaonic building, probably a temple, somewhere in the vicinity from which they came – whether this was actually at Daba itself is something we hope to be able to find out eventually.
